The festive season is well and truly upon us. We’ve compiled a list of tips to help you not only survive but thrive during this year’s festive season!
1) Never Go to A Party Starving
You’ll either reach for all the wrong foods or get totally wasted on you first drink. Try having a small meal or snack beforehand to avoid this. A protein smoothie, sushi, salad, or soup, are all good options.
2) Mindful Eating
Be mindful of over-eating and getting enough nutrients at this time of year. It’s very easy to over-eat (in terms of calories) at parties where canapés are served. That’s because your stomach has emptied by the time you have your next bite (approx 30 minutes later). Grazing puts added strain on the digestive system as it will be required to work (potentially) for hours, until you stop eating. It’s very easy to forget how much you have eaten, while still being left feeling hungry. If you arrive home still hungry, a bowl of bone broth or plant based protein (such as brown rice) shake should do the trick until the morning.
As for sit down or buffet style lunches and dinners, avoid over eating by limiting yourself to one serving, eat slowly and chew food well. You will digest your foods better this way and feel full on a lot less food. And of course, leave room for dessert! Take a slither of your favourite dessert and add some fruits, if you’re still craving something sweet. Try drinking a chamomile, peppermint, or fennel tea at the end of a big meal to help to aid digestion, if you are left feeling bloated or full.
3) Keeping Hydrated
Drinking a glass of water between alcoholic drinks is important to replenish lost fluids and slow down your alcoholic drinks. It’s also important to keep hydrated while out gift shopping and running any other last minute chores. If you’re adequately hydrated, you will feel less hungry (yep, that’s right), therefore reducing the likeliness of reaching for the wrong foods and over-eating. 4) Enjoy Time With People You Love
It’s easy to get caught up in work drinks and other compulsory end of year gigs. Time is life’s most valuable asset. Spend it well and with the people you care about the most.
5) Getting Enough Sleep
You don’t want the holidays to wear you down. Getting enough sleep will set you up well for 2017. Ensure at least 7-8 hours of sleep to allow your body to rest and restore adequately.
